168 years of Mountain Baptist Church
Our History
Mountain Baptist Church has been a cornerstone of faith and community since 1857. What began with just six members under the leadership of Brother J.A. Haynes quickly grew into a place where neighbors could gather for worship and learning. By 1858, the first church building was completed and dedicated, laying the foundation for generations to come.
Through the years, Mountain Baptist Church faced both challenges and triumphs. The church navigated the difficulties of the post-Civil War era and periods when services were held only sporadically. Yet, the congregation’s faith and commitment never wavered. By 1882, the church joined the newly formed Shenandoah Association, further connecting with the wider Baptist community.
A renewed chapter of growth began in 1946, when Mountain Baptist Church resumed regular Sunday services, Sunday School, and launched the annual Vacation Bible School. Generous gifts from members, including a building fund donation in 1976 and land donated in 1982, allowed the church to expand, culminating in the completion of the educational building in 1989—a project built debt-free through the dedication of our congregation, neighbors, and the Shenandoah Baptist Association.
In 1986, Mountain Baptist Church became self-supporting, hiring its first full-time pastor. Since then, we have continued to grow spiritually and in community programs, adding a Women's Missionary Union (MWU), and more.
Today, Mountain Baptist Church celebrates over 168 years of worship, fellowship, and service. Our doors are open to all, and we remain committed to being a welcoming place for anyone seeking faith, community, and opportunities to serve.
